The tops of the square tables are made of three boards; one 18" wide flanked by two 11" wide.  The long tables consist of two massive 20" wide boards each.  The grain has been painstakingly aligned.  Much of the work involved in making a beautiful piece of furniture is considering the grain orientation of the lumber.  Most furniture shops give this aspect little regard. Here you can see the double bead edging which softens the corners and gives the table edge an inviting feel.

The column is turned in a tradition vase shape.  The legs attach to the column with a sliding dovetail joint.  For additional strength there is a steel spider attached to the underside of the base.

rumneytable3.jpg The tops are easily removed for transportation. They are held in place with off-set wooden turned pins. There are also metal table clips on the ends of each table to allow multiple tables to be ganged up to make one long table.

These tables were comissioned as a set of seven squares and two longs. The project was a joint effort between my father in-law, Josh Metcalf, and I.

Two 11' long tables.

The tables are made of Black Cherry. They are finished with boiled linseed oil, multiple coats of waterlox varnish and paste wax.
