Handwork
is on display here with the Gothic carving along the aprons, influenced
by 17th century British furniture. The aprons are joined to the legs
with mortise and tenon joinery, finished with diamond faceted pegs. |

The
turned legs incorporate three pommel cuts, which are the points where
the square stock turns round. This is a difficult detail to
achieve in hand turned legs, but the effect is quite elegant when it
comes out well. |
The
Hanley Coffee Table is made of American Black Walnut. It was
designed by friend and schoolmate Erin Hanley. You can find her
work at www.erinhanley.com.
The carvings are done band hand with only a few different tools.
It is finished with linseed oil, Waterlox varnish and wax. Photos of the table build process can be found here. |
