The
strong figure of a beautiful set of flame birch boards is on display
here. This is a tricky wood to work, but with a bit of extra
effort the results are worth it. |

The
table base is made of hard maple, painted with a series of dyes and
milk paints to give the final finish some complexity. The legs
are canted outwards at 1.5° to give a sturdy braced look. This is
also to help match the design to the Windsor Bowback chairs made to go
along with this piece. |
The
Colorado Table is made of Flame Birch and Hard Maple. Earlier in
the year I harvested a few Chagga mushrooms from the nearby woods to
make a medicinal tincture. In the process you are left with a bit
of liquid that is an incredibly strong brownish/orange color. I
used this as a dye on the table, and it was species appropriate
too. Chagga grows primarily on Birch trees. I finished the table with a handful of coats of oil based varnish. ![]() The Colorado Table was designed to pair with these Bowback Windsor Chairs. Photos of the Table in the making can be found here. |
