• Carved Hope Chest •

The letter carving on the front of the chest was my first attempt at the technique. The curved letters present the most difficulties and require the proper shaped gouges. I was quite pleased with the results.
The dovetailed carcase meets the floor with help from an ogee bracket foot base. The ogee is shaped using the cove cutting method on a tablesaw, then finished with scrapers and sanding.
The pulls stop at 90° and allow easy transport of the chest.

The Carved Hope Chest is made of black cherry. It is finished with boiled linseed oil, shellac and paste wax. It was made as a gift for my father to give to his wife to house her family documents and photos.
